How to prepare your child for GCSE success: a term-by-term plan

A realistic revision timeline for GCSE students, plus what parents should do at each stage to support without adding pressure.

GCSEs reward steady preparation far more than heroic last-minute effort. The students who do best rarely work the longest hours — they start earlier, revise actively, and know exactly what the examiner wants. Here is how that looks across the year.

Autumn term: build the foundations

This is the term for filling gaps, not for revision. Go through the specification for each subject and mark every topic honestly as secure, shaky or unknown. Tutoring is most valuable here, because a shaky topic in October becomes a lost grade in June.

Spring term: practise like the exam

Switch from learning content to producing answers under time pressure. Past papers with the mark scheme beside them teach exam technique faster than any revision guide. Encourage your child to mark their own work — seeing where marks are awarded changes how they write.

Final weeks: consolidate and rest

Short, frequent recall sessions beat long cramming. Sleep, food and a calm house matter more than anyone admits at this stage. Cut back on new material; the goal now is confidence and stamina.

Revision methods that actually work

  • Retrieval practice: close the book and write down everything remembered
  • Spaced repetition: revisit a topic after a day, a week, then a month
  • Past papers under timed conditions, marked against the scheme
  • Teaching a topic aloud to a parent or sibling
  • Not: re-reading notes or highlighting, which feel productive but are not

What parents can do

Your job is structure and calm, not content. Agree a weekly timetable together, protect a quiet workspace, keep an eye on sleep, and ask about process ("what did you practise?") rather than outcomes ("what did you score?"). Praise effort that is visible and specific.

When tutoring makes the difference

One-to-one support pays off most when a student is capable but stuck: they understand the lesson yet lose marks, or they avoid a subject out of anxiety. Our GCSE Success Programme is built around this — targeted topic repair, exam technique, and regular written feedback to parents so nothing is a surprise in results week.
